Munich is the third largest city in Germany. The city’s motto is “München mag dich” (“Munich likes you”). Its native name, München, is derived from the Old German word for Mönche, which means “Monks” in English. This is the reason for the monk on the city’s coat-of-arms. Black and gold – the colours of the Holy Roman Empire – have been the city’s official colours since the time of Ludwig the Bavarian.

Munich is also famous for beer and sausages, but the city is also an economic powerhouse to be reckoned with.

Climate

Munich has a continental climate, strongly modified by the proximity of the Alps. The city’s altitude and proximity to the northern edge of the Alps mean that precipitation is rather high. Rain storms often come violently and unexpectedly. The range of temperature between day and night or summer and winter can be extreme. A warm downwind from the Alps (a föhn wind) can change the temperatures completely within a few hours, even in the winter.

Winters last from December to March. Munich experiences rather cold winters, but heavy rainfall is rarely seen in the winter. The coldest month is January with an average temperature of ?2 °C (30 °F). Snow cover is seen for at least a couple of weeks during winter. Summers in Munich city are fairly warm with average temperature of 19 °C (70 °F) in the hottest month of July. The summers last from May until September.

Viktualienmarkt

A gourmet’s paradise with stalls that not easily sell the freshest produce, but traditional Bavarian Schweinshax’n and Speck, seafood, cheeses, herbs, honey, even sushi. Located south of the Marienplatz, this is a place to grab a bite or stock up on fresh produce. Just be careful of the feisty female vendors.

Englischer Garten

Founded in 1789, the popular English Garden stretches along the bank of the Isar river and brims with activity, with street performers and people launching and boating by the river banks. In the summer, the Seehaus, a beer garden situated by the lake, is popular with visitors for its pictureque views.

BMW Museum

The long awaited revamped Museum has finally reopened after a major overhaul. Similar to the Toyota Museum Japan, this is definitely pit stop for all car enthusiasts.

Deutsches Museum

One of the bigest science and technology museums in the world, with more than 100,000 items on display- this attraction covers everything from lighting demonstrations to space travel to hydraulics to the first German submarine.

Cycling Tours

If you have time, take in Munich’s culture and nature on a a bicycle. With 800 miles of cycle paths, the city is a cyclist haven. You can make pit stops in the nearby countryside to visit to baroque monasteries and parish churches in quaint villages.

Olympiastadion

Situated in northern Munich, the olympiastadion was the main venue for the 1972 Summer Olympics. With a capacity of 69,250, the stadium also hosted events including 1974 World Cup Final and 1988 European Championship Final.
